A Tanzania Family Adventure

Not too much travelling, but lots of exciting wildlife!

A Tanzania Family Adventure

7 days from £1,260 pp plus international flights

This classic Tanzania safari is ideal for families, as there are no long road transfers but you still get excellent game viewing. It’s also great value for money, with your own driver guide and good quality accommodation, including 3 nights in a beautiful tented camp with incredible views over Tarangire.

If you’re travelling with children or prefer to avoid long road journeys, this is the safari for you! Road transfers are kept to a minimum, but you’ll still see masses, from the charismatic rock hyrax (dassies) and elephant herds of Tarangire to the vast Ngorongoro Crater. You’ll have your own private vehicle and driver guide, so you can set the pace each day.

Tarangire is one of Tanzania’s lesser-known national park, but safaris amongst its baobab and thorny acacia tree-studded grasslands can be very rewarding. It’s famously home to some of East Africa’s greatest numbers of elephants, especially in the dry season, and lions (some who like to climb trees!) and more than 500 species of bird live here. Tarangire is also the only national park in Tanzania where you can find the endangered greater kudu, ashy starling and fringe-eared oryx.

You might spot more elephants in Lake Manyara National Park, and you can picnic by the lake that draws often vast numbers of flamingos and hundreds of other bird species including pelicans and African fish eagles.

The level of accommodation makes this trip particularly good value. Spend a night in a comfortable lodge set in bird-filled gardens, then 3 nights in a lovely, Maasai-run stilted camp perched on massive rocks overlooking Tarangire, and 2 nights in a charming rural lodge, where you can chill out in the pool and enjoy produce from the farm.

  • Classic safari experience with your own private driver guide
  • Short road transfers, so ideal for families
  • Stay in stilted tents with amazing Rift Valley views
  • Picnic on the shores of Lake Manyara
  • Game drives in Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks
  • Explore the iconic Ngorongoro crater

Beach Extension

To extend your holiday and see
yet another side of Tanzania,
you could add a beach
stay to this trip.

Fly into Kilimanjaro Airport and be met by your driver guide, who will drive you to Arumeru River Lodge near Arusha (40 mins). Rest after your flight, take a swim in the pool or explore the tropical gardens, where you can look out for tiny dikdiks - Africa’s smallest antelopes. Dinner

Your safari experience begins in earnest as your driver guide takes you on the 120km journey to Tarangire.  Stop for a picnic lunch in the park and enjoy your first game drive. Maasai staff will welcome you to your stilted tent in Maweninga camp and you’ll get your first sighting of those unforgettable views. Full board

Morning and afternoon game drives will show you the beauty of Tarangire – how many elephants can you spot? You can picnic in the park or return to camp for lunch. In the evening, enjoy the stunning sunsets over the Rift Valley as you sit by the fireplace on Maweninga’s terrace. Full board

Another full day’s game viewing in Tarangire, and again you choose a picnic or to return to Maweninga for lunch. This evening why not gaze at the incredible starry sky from the comfort of the veranda of the bar on the camp’s rock terrace? Full board

It’s time to say goodbye to your Maasai hosts at Maweninga and head for Lake Manyara National Park (1.5 hours) and picnic by the turquoise waters of Lake Manyara, home to flocks of flamingos, pelicans and ibis. This afternoon you head towards the Ngorongoro Crater, stopping at Bashay Rift Lodge. Full board

Wake to wonderful farmland views at Bashay before your driver guide takes you to explore the Ngorongoro Crater – under an hour from the lodge. Picnic in the crater then return to Bashay to chill out. Wander around the vegetable gardens and coffee plantations, visit the bee hives or cool off in the pool. Full board

After breakfast and a final look at those lovely rural views, you transfer back to Arusha (2.5 hours) in time for lunch before your driver guide drops you at Kilimanjaro Airport. If you’re extending your holiday with a trip to Zanzibar or the coast you’ll be taken to the airport before lunch, in time for the flight to the coast. Breakfast (lunch)
