Wildebeest & Waterfalls

Serengeti’s Great Wildebeest Migration, the famous Ngorongoro Crater, and the thundering Victoria Falls

Wildebeest & Waterfalls

11 days from £3,915 pp plus international flights

This trip transports you to three of the most spectacular natural phenomena on earth: the Great Migration in the Serengeti, the vast Ngorongoro Crater and the colossal Victoria Falls. And we’ll make sure that you’re in the right part of the Serengeti for maximum wildlife viewing during the migration.

Cameras at the ready, jaws prepared to drop – on this 11-day trip you are faced with stupendous spectacle after stupendous spectacle.

You’ll have 3 full days of game drives in the Serengeti, staying in a beautiful classic safari camp. To ensure the best view of the migration, the itinerary and location of the camp varies according to when you visit. From January to March you camp in the southern plains when millions of zebra and wildebeest give birth, attracting vast numbers of predators in an astounding cycle of new life and death. From July to October you camp in the northern Serengeti as the immense herds of zebra and wildebeest travel through in search of new grazing, pursued by lions and with crocodiles waiting at every river crossing.

You’ll also travel down into the incredible Ngorongoro Crater, staying in a hotel on the eastern edge of the crater, giving you amazing sunset views across this iconic landscape.

You finish with three nights in colonial splendour in the ‘grand dame’ of Victoria Falls hotels, relaxing after your safari and enjoying a sunset cruise on the Zambezi. Naturally you’ll want to visit the Falls themselves, and there are also plenty of activities such as white water rafting, helicopter flights over the Falls and bungee jumping – whether your days here are chilled out or action-packed is up to you. You could even opt to spend a day over the border in Botswana, at Chobe National Park.

stay to this trip.

DAY 1: ARRIVE IN ARUSHA, TANZANIA

If you travel from January-March you will have a private vehicle and driver guide for your time on safari. Your driver guide will meet you at Kilimanjaro Airport and transfer you to Rivertrees Country Inn in Arusha (40 minutes). Set in the foothills of Mount Meru, Rivertrees is ideal for relaxing after your flight. Half board

DAY 2: LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast your driver guide will take you the roughly 2-3 hours to Lake Manyara National Park, a small park, but excellent for bird life including flamingoes, plus a variety of other wildlife.  You’ll have a game drive in the park, with picnic lunch, before heading to Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge in time for dinner – and that sunset view over the crater. Full board

DAY 3: NGORONGORO CRATER TOUR, THEN SOUTHERN SERENGETI

Sopa Lodge is just a few minutes from the crater, so you’ll be among the first to descend the 600m to the crater floor this morning. You’ll spend six hours here, picnicking and game watching in this vast volcanic caldera, before your driver heads to the southern Serengeti short grass plains, to your home for the next 4 nights, the beautiful Kirurumu Serengeti Ndutu Camp. Full board

DAYS 4 - 6: SERENGETI

Three days of hopefully quite astonishing game viewing now follow, with morning and afternoon game drives in the heart of the migration in the southern Serengeti plains. You’ll either picnic in the park or return to the camp for lunch. At night, enjoy splendid dinners cooked over the camp’s fire and star gazing in those endless skies. Full board

DAY 7: SERENGETI TO AIRPORT

Your last chance to get photographs of the migration, with a final game drive in the Serengeti. In the late afternoon your driver will take you to Ndutu Airstrip for the one-hour flight to Kilimanjaro Airport. You will be met on arrival and driven the five minutes to KIA Lodge. Here you will have dinner and rest for a few hours before being transferred back to the airport for your flight to Nairobi and on to Victoria Falls.   Full board

DAY 8: VICTORIA FALLS, ZIMBABWE

You will be met on arrival at the airport this morning, and transferred to the colonial elegance of the Victoria Falls Hotel. Take time to rest after your early start and take in the splendour of the hotel – it’s a destination in itself! In the evening, toast your arrival in Victoria Falls with a sundowner during the sunset cruise on the Zambezi. Breakfast

DAYS 9 - 10: VICTORIA FALLS

You have two full days here, plenty of time to enjoy the views of the Falls from the hotel garden, and to get up close to the thundering spectacle – perhaps take a ‘Flight of the Angels’ by helicopter over them.  Shop for traditional crafts in the town, go white water rafting - or bungee jumping, if you’re feeling adventurous. If you’re missing the game drives, you also have the option (at extra cost) of crossing into Botswana, for a day in Chobe National Park.  Breakfast

DAY 11: TO NAIROBI, KENYA

Today you bid farewell to Victoria Falls, as your driver takes you to the airport for the flight back to Nairobi and your onward journey home. You will have amassed memories for a lifetime on this remarkable trip – and, we suspect, thousands of photographs! Breakfast

Tanzania is quiet but rainy in April and May
Due to the long rains around late March to the end of May, Tanzania’s wildlife reserves tend to be much quieter in these months, however you need to be accepting of potentially quite a lot of rain. This can of course make travel quite difficult, so you also need a sense of humour.
Otherwise, any time is fine, though if you’re looking for the very best wildlife, July to October is peak season. Other than this, if the migration is your thing, you’ll see that we’ve offered two versions of this trip depending on the time of year and this is down to where it is best to be in order to get a good chance of seeing the migration.
Victoria Falls is good to see at any time of year. The peak flow (and spray!) is towards the end of the rainy season so tends to be about April to June.
